I didn’t set out to start a New Bern marketing agency.

Like a lot of people, I built a career, climbed a few ladders (and slid down a few snakes), and spent years writing, communicating, and helping organizations tell their stories.

Somewhere along the way, I realized I’d learned a thing or two about what makes people pay attention — and what makes them tune out. I had a set of communication skills that actually worked.

Spine & Leaf Media grew out of that realization. I’d spent years watching small businesses struggle to communicate what made them worth choosing — not because they lacked something to say, but because they didn’t have the tools, the time, or the right partner to help craft their message. I wanted to be that partner.

What Spine & Leaf Media does

As a New Bern marketing agency, Spine & Leaf Media helps small businesses and local and state-wide organizations look sharp, sound credible, and show up where their customers are looking.

That starts with the foundations: a well-built website, strong copy, photography and video that reflects who you actually are, and an SEO strategy that puts you in front of local searchers. But for many clients, it goes further than that.

Increasingly, the most meaningful work we do is strategic — building complete marketing plans and working alongside business owners to engineer campaigns that run across both digital and real-world channels. It’s the kind of partnership where figure out where you are and where you want to be and then build the road between those two points.

Every client is different. Some need one well-executed project. Others need an ongoing partner who understands their business and keeps their marketing moving. Either way, the approach is the same: listen first, then build something that works.

What’s in the name?

I’ve no hesitation in saying AI helped me find the name. I input what I planned to do with this business, a little about my background and skill set, and asked for 20 or more options. I ended up combining some of the options to come up with Spine & Leaf Media.

On a practical level, it’s a literary thing: the spine refers to the spine of a book, the leaf is the page, and media — well, that’s an obvious addition.

Metaphorically, the “spine” represents the structure behind everything — the strategy, the plan, the framework that keeps your marketing aligned and your message consistent. The “leaf” is the creative expression of that strategy — the words, images, and ideas that make people stop and pay attention. You need both. One without the other is either all skeleton or all decoration.
