Love & Life Photography website redesign – effective photography website design case study by Spine & Leaf Media

Case study: An effective photography website design for
Love & Life Photography

Every creative business needs a digital presence that reflects its artistry and professionalism. For Love & Life Photography, that meant redesigning an outdated website to match the calibre of the work behind it. This photography website design case study catalogs the initial challenge and the approach we took to resolve it.

Website: LoveandLifePhotography.com
Business: Wedding, engagement, family, and newborn photography.
Website purpose: Showcase portfolio work, provide password-protected client galleries, and communicate Tracey’s approach and experience.
Project goal: Refresh the website to reflect Tracey’s current photography style and enhance the client experience.

The challenge

Tracey Bartmann-Leek, owner of Love and Life Photography in St. Louis, had spent years building a reputation as one of the city’s top wedding and family photographers — earning annual awards from The Knot along the way.

But her website wasn’t keeping pace with her reputation, her evolving creative direction, or the quality of work she was delivering. For a photographer whose business lives and dies by visual first impressions, that gap mattered. She needed a site that:

  • Reflected a modern design aesthetic to attract young brides and families
  • Showcased her best work with real visual impact
  • Worked flawlessly on any device, from desktop to mobile,
  • Guided visitors naturally from portfolio to booking

Interested in how we helped other small businesses tell their stories online?

(Full disclosure: Tracey and I were business partners at Love and Life Photography for a couple of years in the early 2010s — which means I’ve had a front-row seat to her growth as a photographer for a long time.)

The solution

We started where we always do — with a conversation. Understanding Tracey’s style, her clients, and what she wanted visitors to feel when they landed on her site shaped every design decision that followed. The redesigned site included:

  • A welcoming homepage featuring her signature photography and clear navigation by photo type
  • Prominent display of her The Knot awards for instant credibility
  • A clean, visual portfolio layout with expandable galleries for full-screen viewing
  • Seamless integration with a password-protected gallery system so clients can privately view their finished sessions
  • A blog where Tracey can share behind-the-scenes stories, with training so she can manage it independently

Because photography sites are image-heavy, we placed special emphasis on performance — optimizing image sizes, ensuring fast page loading, and making sure the site felt as good as it looked on every device.

The result

The new site finally matched what Tracey’s clients already knew — that they were working with one of St. Louis’s finest photographers. The visual experience now reflects her creative direction, the portfolio showcases her best work properly, and the client journey from first visit to booking is clear and seamless.

A decade of evolution

We’ve redesigned Love and Life Photography several times over the years, each version reflecting a new stage in Tracey’s business and in the technology itself — from Flash-era galleries to a fully responsive (mobile friendly), modern experience.

YearDesign PhaseHighlights
2010Original WebsiteEarly portfolio site with Flash-style galleries (legacy aesthetic).
2015Mid-cycle RefreshModernized visuals and mobile support added; stronger SEO structure.
2022Most recent redesignClean, responsive layout, image-rich design, and Core Web Vitals optimization.

That decade of evolution is perhaps the most telling proof of all — a client relationship built on trust, results, and a shared commitment to getting it right.

“Derek guided us through the whole process — helping us understand what we needed and creating an affordable small business site with complete end-to-end service.

— Tracey Bartmann-Leek, Love and Life Photography
